Artist's Description
Chinese calligraphy reads "Nian Nian You Yu", which translates as "Every year may you have Abundance in your life".
The expression is used to wish people an ample surplus by the end of every year, to better prepare for the next year. In the Chinese language, the character “余(surplus)” shares the same pronunciation with “鱼( fish)”. 9 carp are also seen as fortunate in feng shui, and stands for abundance and wealth.
Original painting done with Holbein antique watercolors on cold-press watercolor paper. Bottom edge has a raw/torn look. 9"x10".
About Brandy Woods
Brandy Woods is an award-winning illustrator who specializes in Native American-inspired and fantasy themes, and she also enjoy painting and sculpture. A distant great grandmother (about 5 generations back) was full-blooded Choctaw (Chahta) and Brandy was raised with a deep love and respect for the First Nations. She went back to school in her 30's and graduated with honors (and two scholarships!) from Dawson College's prestigious Illustration and Design program. She grew up in Louisiana and spent much of her childhood reading Wendy Pini's 'ElfQuest', as well as numerous books on mythology, shamanism, fantasy, and other cultures.
